About Justice & Technology Lab
The Justice & Technology Lab is a research and design group directed by Professor Sari Graben. The group harnesses an experiential program, combining research of the Justice & Technology Lab with the pedagogy and legal service model of our clinical programs. The Lab provides opportunities for students to work as part of a research and development team that produces solutions drawing upon legal tech and data science. All projects in development share a focus on automating and mechanizing legal information to improve access to justice for marginalized communities. To date, this mandate has focused on the design of expert referral systems and practice based education.
Lab students develop legal technology and data-based solutions for stakeholder clients (courts, firms, non-profits, and legal aid providers) who would not otherwise have access to in-house expertise in automating processes or data analytics. Our research examines how to redesign processes and structures that currently impede public accessibility to government services. This involves a thorough analysis of how user experiences are characterized in law, issues in the collection and publication of data, and the role of partners.
Our Goals
Our multi-disciplinary teams of students will bring legal, technology, and design perspectives to challenges faced by public institutions (e.g., government agencies, legal aid, courts/tribunals, etc.) that provide legal information or advice.
The primary focus of clinic projects will be on the redesign of processes and structures that currently impede the accessibility of government services by users of the public. Law students collaborate with other university students (from design and computer science faculties, and others) to assess existing challenges, brainstorm solutions, and potentially implement those solutions in prototype products or systems.
